2021 was still strongly affected by the continuing public health crisis and the closure of all the venues open to the public since 30 October 2020. These did not reopen until 19 May 2021 with restricted visitor numbers followed by the implementation of the health pass from July 2021. The continuing crisis has had a major impact on all the activities of the Rmn Grand Palais, postponing the opening of exhibitions initially scheduled for the beginning of the year, the opening and operation of the Grand Palais Éphémère, the various engagement projects, and limiting numbers at all the sites, with foreign tourists still in short supply.
The Rmn Grand Palais result was + 5.3M in 2021. This result includes the events activity at the Grand Palais Éphémère, which was particularly hard-hit by the crisis. The building was inaugurated later than planned and the health conditions severely limited any fairs and trade shows. However, revenue was 6.3M compared to 5.7M in 2020, with a larger number of retail days.
The exhibition programme for 2021 was also disrupted by the closure of cultural venues until 19 May 2021. The exhibitions Women Painters at the Musée du Luxembourg and Napoleon at the Grande Halle de La Villette both had to be postponed. The public health crisis also had an impact on public admission, limiting visitor numbers with capacity limits and social distancing measures kept in place and the health pass introduced, with international travel remaining sluggish. There were a little over 580,000 visitors in total to the exhibitions produced by the Rmn Grand Palais, compared to 605,000 in 2020.
Revenue in the bookstores and shops was up by 4.6M compared to 2020. Retail activity was also impacted by the closure of all the bookstores and shops, which lasted for several months, and by the sharp fall in visitor numbers due in particular to the very low international tourist presence at the major sites (particularly at the Musée du Louvre, the Musée d Orsay and the Château de Versailles). Finally, publishing activity resumed with a new impetus, with more exhibitions than in 2020, the development of new partnerships and more diverse activities, particularly for the Art Studios. 56 new publications were released over the year.
REVENUE Total revenue in 2021 was 5.3M, up by 9M compared to 2020.
Bookstores and shops Revenue at the bookstores and shops was still severely impacted by the public health crisis, with activity suspended entirely across all sites between 1 January and 19 May 2021. However,
